Vrat ke Paneer,Mirchi,Aloo ke Pakore

Water Chestnut pakoras/fritters are such a treat during fasting! Potatoes, Green chilies and pieces of paneer dipped in batter and fried to a crisp goes so well with a cup of tea and makes a perfect breakfast or tea time snack during the 9 days of Navratri.

During the nine days of prayers and fasting, we rely heavily on Kuttu(Buckwheat Flour), Singoda (Water Chestnut Flour), Rajgira (Amaranth) and Moraiya/ Sama ke Chawal . These are basically fruits which act as grains and rice-we could almost call them pseudo grains!!! Water Chestnut is a fruit, hence its flour is permitted during fasting. While I was writing this post, I realized that all the things allowed during fasting are all gluten free so our ancestors were on to something when they asked us to give up grains and gluten for 9 days, something the rest of the world is just catching up to and going gluten free!

Sharing my recipe of Vrat ke Pakore as made in my family. If there are certain things that you are not permitted during fasting, please tweak the recipe according to your taste and customs.
