Quinoa Moong Dal Khichri

Quinoa and Yellow Moong Dal come together to make a very easy and delicious one pot meal. The entire meal is ready to be served in 20 minutes. With a minimum amount of ingredients and spices the flavors of dal and quinoa really shine through.

There are so many different ways of making khichri, each region in India makes it in their own unique way. This recipe is from my friend Nishita, she makes it very often for her son who is a picky eater. She does make it with rice though. Since I like to watch my intake of rice and carbs, I substituted the rice with quinoa.

She made it at my house once when she was visiting with her family. Needless to say, there were no leftovers. This combination of quinoa/rice with yellow moong dal works well because Moong dal is one of those dals that cooks in no time, unlike some of the other ones that take a long time. Quinoa and Moong dal, require almost the same amount of cooking time, so this combination works perfectly!

This particular style of khichri is not as soft and mushy or liquidy as the ones made in Northern India. Usually khichri is a combination of rice with some dal and spices. Some add vegetables, some add whole spices and some make it soft, mushy and watery, almost like a really thick soup. Some of the other pulao/khichri recipes and Quinoa recipes on my blog are

Rice and Chana Dal Pulao and

Quinoa,Moong and Peas Pulao/Khichri.

Jeera Quinoa (substitute of Jeera Rice) and

Quinoa Oatmeal Dhokla

Notes

This is a very easy khichri recipe made traditionally with rice and dal. I have substituted rice with quinoa to have a low carbohydrate meal. It can be made the traditional way with rice. This style of khichri is popular in the state of Gujarat.
