Pesto Moong Dal Appe

Bored of the traditional Moong dal vade, I wanted to mix in a fun ingredient to give a boost of flavor. Looked in my fridge and saw Pesto, and thought why not try a fusion of Indian and Italian!

So I mixed in the Pesto to the batter and it gave it such a nice Green color! I was skeptical at first as to how it would taste!

Turned out so much better than my expectations! I put 1 tbsp to begin with, though on hind sight, I could have added more, because I love Pesto in everything, sandwiches, salads, pastas and just on toasted bread!

Moving on to the recipe, here is the written recipe followed by the step by step pictorial one-

Pesto Moong Dal Appe

Aanchal Gupta

A fusion appetizer that combines the Italian and Indian flavors! Wow your family with this unusual combination of flavors where Pesto provides a lot of flavor and color, the moong dal provides protein and it’s super healthy because its made in a few drops of oil!

Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Course Breakfast, Party Appetizer, Snacks

Servings 14 appe

Ingredients

  

  • 1/2 cup Moong dal yellow, washed and soaked overnight
  • 1/2 inch ginger or 1/2 tsp minced ginger
  • 2 Green Chilies or 1/2 tsp minced green chilies
  • 2 tbsp Pesto add more if you like a stronger pesto flavor
  • 1 Green chili chopped
  • 2 tbsp chopped Cilantro/Coriander/dhaniya
  • 2 tbsp chopped onions
  • 1/4 tsp minced garlic
  • 3/4 tsp Lemon/Lime juice
  • salt as needed
  • 3/4 tsp Eno/fruit salt

Instructions

 

  • Grind Dal with Ginger and Green chili or add minced ginger and green chilies to ground dal
  • Heat up Appe pan and add drops of oil in each cavity, heat the oil
  • Mix all ingredients adding Eno/fruit salt in the end
  • Put about a tablespoon in Appe pan, cover and cook on medium.
  • Flip, put little ghee/oil on other side and continue to cook till both sides are golden

Notes

If you are unsure of the taste of Pesto, start with less and adjust according to preference. please do not skip on the Eno, that’s what makes the Appe soft. Add Eno just before adding appe to the pan.

Ingredients to be added to ground dal

Put everything together

Mix well, Add salt  and then add Eno just before adding to pan

Put spoonfuls in Appe pan

Cover and cook on Medium

Flip and cook both sides till golden
