Palak Pakora/Spinach Fritter-Air Fryer Recipe

Spinach pakoras made in an Air Fryer in just a spoonful of oil are healthy and low fat. Made with Gram flour/Besan and Rice flour, these pakoras are gluten free and vegan.

The traditional recipe of pakoras involve deep frying which can definitely add on the calories. These pakoras taste so good that you will forget that they are only made in one spoon of oil. My first Air Fryer recipe was made during Navratri and was a similar recipe using only spinach(no onions) and a combination of water chestnut and tapioca flours.The Vrat ke palak Pakore turned out so good that this time I added onions and used the traditional recipe involving besan and rice flour. Some other healthy ways to include spinach in your diet are these Palak Aloo Tikkis/cakes with Flaxseed and Almond Flour, Blackeyed pea and Spinach Cakes/Tikkis, Spinach puri/paratha and Palak Aloo ki sabzi. These pakoras can be used in Punjabi Pakore Wali Kadhi.

Palak Pakora/Spinach Fritter-Air Fryer Recipe

Spinach pakoras made in an Air Fryer in just a spoonful of oil are healthy and low fat. Made with Gram flour/Besan and Rice flour, these pakoras are gluten free and vegan.

Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Servings 12 pakoras

Ingredients

  

  • 1 cup chopped spinach firmly packed
  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp salt or as per taste
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chili powder/lal mirch powder
  • 1/2 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp lemon/lime juice
  • pinch of garam masala
  • 3 tbsp Gram Flour/Besan
  • 2 tbsp Rice Flour for crispness
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Pinch of Baking Soda
  • Cooking Spray or oil for brushing

Instructions

 

  • Preheat Air Fryer at 370 F for 5 minutes
  • Mix Spinach,onions,salt,ginger,red chili powder,garam masala and lemon juice in a bowl
  • Use your fingers to mix the ingredients,massaging the spinach so it sweats and leaves water
  • Add the oil and Gram flour/Besan, Rice flour and Baking Soda till it forms a dough(No Water to be used)
  • Spray with cooking spray or brush with oil the Air Fryer basket and put medium size pakoras directly on the basket
  • Spray the pakoras or brush lightly with oil and cook at 370 F for 5 minutes
  • Flip the pakoras,spray or brush lightly with oil and cook again for an additional 5 minutes at 370F

Notes

No water is added to the dough.The spinach is mashed with salt and that makes it release water which is what is used to bind the flours to the spinach and onion. You can add chopped green chilies for a spicier version.The rice Flour is to make the pakoras crisp, but if you don’t have rice flour, just increase the amount of gram flour/besan.

Ingredients

Add salt, Red chili powder, ginger, garam masala and lemon juice

Mix well so that spinach and onion release water

Add oil, flours and pinch of baking soda

Mix to make a soft dough and place directly on the basket. Spray or brush with oil

Cook at 370 F for 5 minutes

After 5 minutes, flip each pakora, spray or brush some oil and air fry again for 5 minutes at 370F

Enjoy with Green Chatni and Apple Butter Chatni(Sweet tamarind Chatni)
