How to Clean Burnt Pots and Pans

Common household ingredients like vinegar and baking soda are used to clean burnt and stained pots and pans. When they come together, they create a chemical reaction that is helpful in cleaning the burnt, soiled pan.

I make Indian tea every morning for me and my husband and those of us who are die hard fans of good Indian tea know that the only way to make good  tea is by boiling it for at least 30 minutes! I love my tea but it is a constant struggle to clean the pot in which I make tea every morning.

The loose tea leaves, milk and sugar boil and completely stain the pot. I also make ghee at home and face a similar situation each time as the pan gets burnt when the milk solids from the butter settle at the bottom of the pan. The grease makes it worse!

I experimented with baking soda and vinegar once after making ghee, of course it was so greasy, I had to use some dishwashing liquid while boiling and left it overnight. Normally I require a good bit of elbow grease to clean the pot but this time I just used a scouring pad and was able to clean the pot with minimum effort.

Now I use this baking soda-vinegar combination regularly to clean burnt, dirty and stained pots and pans with little effort!

Here is the written method followed by the step by step pictorial one-

Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Course How to

Ingredients

  • 1 cup White Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda

Instructions

  • In your burnt pot/pan fill water, till the stain
  • Add vinegar and bring to boil
  • Add baking soda and let it simmer for 5 minutes(optional)being careful at this point as the baking soda tends to spill over
  • Let it cool completely or even overnight for heavily soiled/burnt pan
  • Scrub with a scouring pad and get a shiny, bright new looking pot/pan

Notes

Be extra careful while adding baking soda to the vinegar. There is a chemical reaction that takes place which is what helps to remove the stains. My pan was really big, so I did not move my pan from the stove, but I added the soda in small increments.Simmering is recommended for heavily soiled pots/pans.Otherwise you can just leave the baking soda in the hot vinegar water till cool enough to handle. For greasy pots, for e.g. if you made ghee, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the boiling water.A good way to do it would be to place your pot/pan in the sink while adding baking soda. This has the added benefit of cleaning the sink drain as well if some of the mixture spills into your sink!
