Healthy Farali Pattice in Appe Pan

A quick, easy and low-fat version of the Farali Pattice. Desiccated coconut replaces fresh coconut and instead of mincing fresh cilantro, mint, green chilies etc, I have used Green chatni/cilantro mint chatni that we usually have ready and handy at home.

The word Farali or Falhari literally means a person who eats fruits. Since fruits are consumed during fasting, the word farali/falhari has loosely come to signify food consumed while fasting. This recipe is very popular while fasting, specially in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The main ingredients in this recipe are potatoes and coconuts and the pattice is traditionally deep fried. The coconut is blended with fresh cilantro, mint, green chilies to make a sweet, spicy and tangy filling. To make a quicker, easier and healthier version, I have mixed desiccated coconut with Green chatni/cilantro mint chatni  that most of us keep ready and handy at home. Making it in an Appe pan, we can make it in only a few drops of oil, reducing the calories dramatically!

For Deep Frying the Pattice-Make sure there is very little water content in potatoes. After boiling, place potatoes on a paper towel. Its best to boil the potatoes in the microwave.Place potatoes in fridge for 15-20 minutes to further dry out any water in them. Grating the boiled potatoes gives smooth,even,crack-free pattice. Increase Arrowroot flour to 3 1/2 tbsp instead of 2 1/2 tbsp. Farali pattice is similar to Malai Kofta except the filling in Malai Kofta is usually paneer with nuts instead of coconut. In this No Onion Garlic Malai Kofta recipe for fasting, I have shared tips on how to make perfect non greasy koftas which don’t crack open while frying or soak up too much oil.
