I had been wanting to start including flaxseed in my diet at every meal but found myself sporadically adding a spoonful in smoothies, cakes and chillas etc but couldn’t make it a part of normal everyday diet. I do eat mukhwas after every meal as not only its good for digestion, it also satisfies my sweet craving.

Adding it to my mukhwas, made sure I ate atleast 2 spoons of healthy flaxseed everyday. This multi seed mukhwas combines the benefits of fennel for digestion, flaxseed for its omega 3 and sesame seeds for its fiber and heart healthy, cholesterol reducing benefits. You can read about the benefits of eating flaxseed in this article from Healthline. Medicalnewstoday discusses the benefits of fennel seeds here. Indians always eat fennel after every meal not just as a mouth freshener but also because it helps in digesting. I make this healthy detox drink every morning for bloating and it has helped me successfully keep my weight off. Flaxseed Mouth freshener/mukhwas is one of the easiest ways to include the power packed super food in your diet on a daily basis. The star of this multi seed recipe is flaxseed which is a wonderful source of Omega3 for the vegetarians.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Servings 3 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Flaxseed/Alsi/Javas
  • 1 cup Fennel seeds/Sauf
  • 1/2 cup White Sesame seeds/Safed Til
  • 1/2 cup Red Mukhwas optional
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • In a bowl mix Flaxseed, fennel seeds, lemon juice and salt. cover and set aside for at least 1 hour
  • In a pan, roast sesame seeds on low-medium, till they turn light golden and start crackling, Remove in a bowl and let it cool
  • In the same pan, roast flaxseed and fennel seeds on medium till the flaxseed starts crackling, remove to a bowl and let it cool
  • Mix the three seeds
  • To half the mixture, add the sweet Red Mukhwas and leave the other as is to get two types of mukhwas
  • Store in a glass air tight container

Notes

You can add carom seeds/ajwain and even some dry coconut flakes. If you do add these, roast each one separately in the pan as they have different roasting times. if you like the fennel seeds very crisp, then roast them separately from the flaxseed and also soak them separately in lemon juice and salt. Flaxseed gets toasted faster than the fennel. Adding the sweet red mukhwas is optional. I have added red mukhwas to only half, but if you want the entire mukhwas to be sweet, use 1 cup sweet red mukhwas instead of 1/2 cup.

Hello, thank you for sharing your recipe. As an American, I have a question for you, because we do not consume any kind of after dinner digestion aid. Do you eat this like granola or trail mix? Is just a tablespoon a serving size? What do you and your culture do?

I love trying new things, especially if it is beneficial to my health. Lucky me, I have access to an Indian Market, so I love going there to explore and try new foods.

Hi Kelley, so happy to hear you love to try new recipes and things! A tablespoon should be enough after a meal. If you eat more it’s definitely not harmful. A spoonful after meals not only helps in digestion but also freshens your mouth. For me it also helps in curbing my craving for dessert after a meal!
