Often people confuse between Smoothies and Juice. Juicing is the process where the fruit is blended and then the water along with nutrients is separated from the pulp. What a waste of Fiber! Smoothie on the other hand pulverizes the whole fruits and vegetable, along with the skin and nothing is wasted. I am always looking for ways to add protein to my diet, and what better way than adding almonds. I remember mom always talking about the benefits of Almonds for eye sight and brain development. She used to soak almonds at night for the whole family and next morning peel them and give them to all of us with our breakfast before heading out to school. With our hectic mornings, I just don’t have time to soak and peel the almonds but I always add it to my smoothie. vrat-smoothie-3

Strawberries, Blueberries and kiwi are called Superfoods for a reason, they are nutrient powerhouses containing large amounts of antioxidants,vitamins and minerals. These antioxidants protect against cancer and may reduce the effects of Dementia and Alzheimers. These berries pack such an nutritional punch, that I can easily write a whole article on them. Pomegranates are known for improving heart health and blood circulation and we all know the old saying an Apple a day keeps the doctor away! You can add whatever fruits you have in hand. I have used Peaches, Nectarines, Cantaloupe or whatever fruit is at home. You can customize it to what is at home or what you like. If Pomegranate juice is not available you could try Orange juice.vrat-smoothie-4

This smoothie is my breakfast at least 5 days of the week and is so convenient to carry in my car when I am driving to work. Lot of people have asked what I do to maintain my weight, so along with a healthy diet I do walk regularly at home. Ingredients

  

  • 1 Banana
  • 1/2 Apple
  • 1/2 Kiwi
  • 15 Almonds
  • 1/4 cup Whole Strawberries Frozen
  • 1/4 cup Blueberries Frozen
  • 1/4 cup Diced Pineapple/Mango blend Frozen
  • 1/4 cup Grapes seedless, any variety
  • 1/4 cup Pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp Flaxseed Powder optional

Instructions

 

  • Wash Apple and Grapes.
  • Peel Kiwi and Banana.
  • Blend everything in Blender using the Smoothie setting. If you like it really smooth, run it twice. specially since we keep the skin of the apple and almonds.
  • Mix in Flax seed(don’t use if fasting)

Notes

I also like to use a whole Carrot and 1/4 spinach in my smoothie. I tastes just as good. If you are making it during your fast, you can skip these vegetables!
