Chia Seeds- Chia seeds are high in Omega 3 Fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber and various vitamins and minerals, particularly Vitamin F which is important for hydrating the skin and improving skin function. You can read more about it here in this article by WebMD. Two table spoons of chia seeds contains approximately 140 calories, 11 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, and 9 grams of fat, majority of these fats being omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). These healthy fats are important for maintaining cellular health and reducing inflammation. You can read more about the benefits of chia seeds for skin here. The antioxidants combat free radicals that are responsible for premature aging. Chia seeds have a tendency to absorb water and form a gel like consistency. This property makes chia seeds an excellent natural hydrator for skin. Hydrated skin appears soft, supple, plumper and more youthful giving it the enviable Korean glass skin effect. The high fiber content of chia seeds leads to regular bowel movements which in turn removes waste and toxins from the body, leading to clearer skin.
Heavy Whipping Cream- Heavy whipping cream is a great source of Lactic acid. Lactic acid is a mild form of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). Lactic acid is a natural exfoliator that increase cell turnover and helps in removing the dead skin cells from skins outermost layer. Lactic acid as a gentle exfoliator helps to remove dark spots and treat hyper pigmentation. You can read more about the benefits of lactic acid here in this article by WebMD. Lactic acid is found in dairy products like yogurt, milk and fresh cream(malai) Since whipping cream has almost 40 percent fat, its application leads to elasticity in skin and helps to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Think of it as natures moisturizer!
Raw Organic Unpasteurized Honey- Honey is a natural humectant which means it attracts and retains moisture. Its is also anti inflammatory and speeds up the skins healing process. Regular use of honey helps in fading acne scars. You can read more about the benefits of honey for skin care here in this article by Healthline. Raw, organic unpasteurized honey is the best. Raw honey is not treated in any way and its anti bacterial properties are not compromised by heat. Manuka Honey from New Zealand is known for its healing properties and would be an ideal choice for our face mask if its available.
Lemon juice- The lemon juice provides Vitamin C which is known for its collagen boosting and skin lightening properties. According to Alexander J. Michels, Ph.D ,Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University, ”Vitamin C contributes to photoprotection, decreases photodamage, and is needed for adequate wound healing.” He goes on to say” Topical application of vitamin C appears to be an effective route for delivering ascorbic acid to the skin because ascorbic acid appears to be taken up readily at an acidic pH. You can read more about it here. Lemon juice is our main ingredient for removing dark spots and pigmentation. NEVER APPLY LEMON JUICE DIRECTLY TO YOUR FACE. If you are going out of the house, Please, always use Sunscreen, especially after using a face pack. You shouldn’t use lemon juice, if you know you’re going to be out in the sun, as doing so can increase your risk of sunburn and other side effects.
Substitutions-
Chia seeds can be substituted by Sweet basil seeds/Sabja seeds as they both have similar water retention properties.
Heavy whipping cream can be substituted by milk for oily skin and yogurt for acne prone skin. For normal or dry skin, fresh cream/malai or heavy whipping cream work best. For a vegan face pack, use almond milk/coconut milk or water.
Honey can be omitted if allergic to pollen
Lemon juice can be substituted with turmeric
How to Apply- Cleanse your face Take a tablespoon of the mask and add a few drops of lemon juice to it. Apply a generous thick layer of the DIY Chia seed face pack for glowing skin/Korean Glass skin on your face. Keep for 30 minutes. Rinse off the face mask. Apply toner, which is a must to bring our skins pH to normal. The pH of lemon is 2-3 whereas the pH of our skin is 5.5 so the application of toner helps to normalize the pH of our skin. Follow with your moisturizer or some vitamin E oil. For best results use on alternate days. Even though its an all natural skin pack, we don’t want to over exfoliate and irritate the skin. If you find its irritating your skin, use every 2-3 days.
How to Store- Store the face mask in a glass container with a tight lid in the refrigerator. Do not mix lemon juice to the entire quantity of the face mask. We have used whipping cream(fresh cream/malai) and if we mix dairy with lemon juice and store it, the cream will split and the face pack will turn sour and go bad. Add a few drops of lemon juice only to 1 tbsp of face pack and apply immediately. The DIY chia seed face pack for glowing skin lasts up to 10 days in the refrigerator.
