DIY Avocado Face Mask for Dark Spots and Glowing Complexion

A DIY Avocado face mask that helps in reducing dark spots and pigmentation and gives glowing skin. Made of ingredients that are edible and safe to consume this face mask has no chemicals or preservatives and is a budget friendly option versus the expensive creams. My philosophy is if its good enough for eating, its good enough to be applied on our skin!

The three ingredients in this face mask are  Avocado, lemon juice and honey. As per this article by Medical News Today on the many benefits of avocados for skin, it says that avocados are rich in Vitamin C and E and a reservoir of monounsaturated fatty acids. The high levels of healthy fat when applied to the skin makes the skin feel soft, plump and moisturized. It goes on to say that avocado oil has anti inflammatory effects and can even be helpful in treating acne.

The lemon juice provides Vitamin C which is known for its collagen boosting and skin lightening properties. According to Alexander J. Michels, Ph.D.,Linus Pauling Institute,Oregon State University,”Vitamin C contributes to photoprotection, decreases photodamage, and is needed for adequate wound healing.” He goes on to say” Topical application of vitamin C appears to be an effective route for delivering ascorbic acid to the skin because ascorbic acid appears to be taken up readily at an acidic pH. You can read more about it here.

Now the pH of lemon is 2-3 where as the pH of our skin is 5.5. So we have to mix lemon juice with mashed avocados and honey and to get the benefits of a topical application of ascorbic acid. Never apply lemon juice directly to your skin. This is our key ingredient for reducing  dark/sun spots.

Honey is the moisturizer that nature provided us and as per this article on Healthline, its also an exfoliator that removes dry, dull skin and reveals new cells.Regular use of honey helps in fading acne scars.Honey is also a humectant, which means it has a natural ability to hold on to water without a greasy/oily feeling. The best kind of honey is the raw, organic, unpasteurized kind from your local area. Raw honey is not treated in any way and its anti bacterial properties are not compromised by heat.

If you are going out of the house, Please, always use Sunscreen, especially after using a face pack. You shouldn’t use lemon juice, if you know you’re going to be out in the sun, as doing so can increase your risk of sunburn and other side effects. I don’t use any night cream on my face the day I put a pack. After applying for a week, always take a break of a few days and then you can start again. You will definitely notice a difference in your skin with regular use. Remember, this is an all natural face pack, there are no side effects!

If avocados are not readily available, then use this DIY face mask for reducing dark spots and pigmentation.

Notes

Always apply on clean face and follow up with an alcohol free toner. This is a must as toner helps to restore the ph balance of the skin to normal. This is to bring the pH level of your skin back to normal. Remember we talked about Lemons being acidic and having a lower pH than our skin! After toning, either apply moisturizer or a few drops of vitamin E oil. After applying the face mask for 5-6 days, give a couple of days break and then start again. if you are sensitive to lemon juice, use a tsp of thick yogurt instead. You shouldn’t use lemon if you know you’re going to be out in the sun, as doing so can increase your risk of sunburn and other side effects.
