Chocolate Covered Kalakand

One of the easiest Indian desserts to make is Kalakand, one of the most viewed posts on my blog. I guess everyone loves that there are only 3 ingredients and the whole dessert takes under 5 minutes to prepare. I wanted to tweak the recipe a little to make it appeal to all chocolate lovers as well.  Indian mithai topped with chocolate-best of both worlds in my opinion!

I didn’t want to use any fancy chocolates, it had to be something that’s easily available and affordable-I decided on chocolate chips. I have to be honest, I wasn’t too sure how melted chocolate chips would set over the kalakand. I must say, it set perfectly and I loved the taste and look of it!

A bunch of us were meeting at a friends house to practice a dance sequence for a sangeet for her friends son. I took the chocolate covered kalakand to my friends house and everyone raved about the taste! I knew I had a winner. It looked so fancy but only took a few minutes to make! here are some of my other popular and easy desserts-Chocolate,Dates and Nut Laddoo, Instant RabriMango Mousse-No Eggs,Gelatin or Agar Agar, Kheer in a Crockpot-Recipe for 20, Kulfi,  and of course my famous Instant Kalakand.

So if you have five minutes, you too can make this easy dessert! Here is the written recipe followed by step by step pictorial one-

Chocolate Covered Kalakand

Aanchal Gupta

A fusion dessert that combines the famous Indian sweet kalakand with chocolate to make a one of a kind dessert.

Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 4 minutes
Total Time 6 minutes

Course Dessert
Cuisine Indian/International

Ingredients

For Kalakand

  • 1 1/2 cups Milk Powder Full Fat(I used Nido brand)
  • 7 ozs/200 gms/1/2 can Condensed Milk
  • 150 ml Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Green cardamom powder/Elaichi powder and few strands of saffron optional

For Chocolate layer

  • 4 tbsp Chocolate chips
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted Butter
  • Pistachios chopped for garnishing

Instructions

For kalakand

  • In a microwave safe bowl,mix milk powder,condensed milk,heavy whipping cream,cardamom powder and saffron
  • Microwave for 2 minutes,mix well.
  • Microwave for 1 minute, mix well.
  • Do an additional 30 seconds only if needed.
  • Pour into a rectangular dish.
  • Take parchment/wax paper and place on top of kalaknd and smoothen with a flat bowl/plate/spoon(If needed)

For Chocolate layer

  • In a small microwaveable glass bowl place chocolate chips and butter and microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Mix and Microwave for an additional 10 seconds

For assembling

  • Pour hot melted chocolate over hot kalakand(very Important)
  • Refrigerate for 2-3 hours till the chocolate solidifies.
  • To cut into pieces, take VERY HOT water in a cup and a sharp knife.
  • Dip knife in hot water, wipe with paper towel and loosen sides.
  • Keep warming the knife by dipping in hot water and cutting the kalakand.
  • Garnish with chopped pistachios

Notes

It is important to smoothen the top of kalakand so that the chocolate layer can go on smoothly(IF needed). Pour hot chocolate immediately over hot kalakand. Its important to use a warm knife to cut the chocolate covered kalakand, otherwise the chocolate will break. I like to dip the knife in HOT water, wipe and cut. Always run the knife around the edges first and then cut into pieces.

Hi Honey, you can use any variety of chocolate chips.I am not sure of using a chocolate bar though. I had Nestle brand chocolate chips at home, that’s what I used.
