Brazilian Lemonade/ Limonada

A refreshing summer drink that’s creamy, tangy, sweet and frosty. This lemonade recipe is extremely popular in Brazil and is easily made with only 2 ingredients-Limes and condensed milk. It takes only 5 minutes to make this recipe and is a perfect recipe for summer. This lemonade is also popular in Brazil as Swiss lemonade or Limonada Suica. Sweetened condensed milk is one of the main ingredients and since the Swiss company Nestle used to market sweetened condensed milk in Brazil in the 1940s, this lemonade got the moniker of Swiss lemonade.

Even though this recipe is called lemonade, we are not using lemons at all, instead we use limes. So technically we should call it Brazilian Limeade instead of Brazilian lemonade. In Brazil, the language spoken is Portuguese and the word Limao is used interchangeably between lemons and limes.

One of the most common questions asked is – if the lemonade is bitter? It has a hint of bitterness from the peel and pith, that’s why its important to just pulse the lime with water and let the limes still be chunky. We DO NOT want to pulverize the limes!  Personally, I felt the lemonade was refreshing, citrusy, sweet, tart creamy with the slightest hint of bitterness, which I actually liked. As an alternate- remove the peel along with the white pith and use the peeled limes with the sweetened condensed milk. I covered the pitcher of lemonade with some wrap and refrigerated it and tried it the next day. It tasted just as good the next day and had not turned bitter. But because we are using fresh limes-it would be better to make it as close to serving as possible.

Variations to this drink

Add alcohol– Coconut rum goes very well with this lemonade, if you wish to spike it for the adults. Vodka and tequila will also work well the flavors.

Keep it vegan- Use sweetened condensed coconut milk or sweetened condensed oat milk.

Skip condensed milk-use sugar with heavy whipping cream or any creamy dairy or non dairy product

Servings 6 cups

Equipment

  • 1 blender
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 sieve
  • 1 bowl

Ingredients

  • 4 limes washed
  • 4 cups water 1000 ml/ 1 liter
  • 6 tbsp condensed milk 7 oz/ 1/2 can/ 200 gms
  • 3 scoops crushed/cubed ice
  • lime slices for garnishing
  • margarita salt for rimming the glasses

Instructions

  • Scrub and rinse limes well. Roll them slightly with your palms to release juice.
  • Remove the ends and cut each lime into 8 pieces
  • In a blender, add the lime pieces and top with water
  • Blend the lime and water mixture in short bursts or use the pulse mode. We dont want to pulverize the limes as that will blend the white pith as well, making it bitter.
  • Place the sieve over the glass bowl and strain the water from the limes. Use the back of the spoon to push the liquid from the sieve. Discard the remaining lime solids.
  • Put the strained lime juice back into the blender, add condensed milk, and ice and blend till everything blends well
  • Pour into salt rimmed glasses, top with sliced limes and serve immediately

Notes

Choose ripe limes with thin skin and rub them gently with your palm on the counter to release the juices. Its important to just pulse the lime and water mixture. Since we are blending limes with skin, pith, seeds and all, we don’t want to pulverize the limes. Instead just pulse, to get the tart flavor. I didn’t add any sugar, I recommend adding more condensed milk, if you like it sweeter, it will make the lemonade more creamy and frothy. I did try the lemonade the next day and it had not turned bitter. I also liked the taste of the margarita salt on the rim, sweet, salty and tart, sort of like a margarita. You can blend the lime and condensed milk mixture and pour into a pitcher and add the ice to individual glasses before serving.
