All Natural Hair Oil to Promote Regrowth and Prevent Hair Loss

An all natural hair oil with the goodness of onions and garlic, curry leaves ,fenugreek/methi, nigella/kalonji is a perfect remedy for those suffering from hair loss. Additionally the addition of castor oil, almond oil and vitamin E oils helps to promote regrowth.

This hair oil is a tweak to the hair oil recipe for preventing premature graying which was first shared by my friend Hansika, who ran a successful hair salon in Mumbai before moving to the US. After I started using this oil, I also read a few articles on the benefits of onion juice and garlic for hair loss. Of course, I had to try it out. Let me tell you what a mess it was! First I had to blend the onions, strain it and then apply the juice on my scalp for a couple of hours. I put a shower cap and still it dripped all over my back and on to my clothes. I also didn’t want to put hair oil twice a week and then onion juice once or twice a week, it felt like too much time spent on hair care. Plus the smell lingered even after shampooing.

I decided I was going to cook the onions and garlic along with the oil I regularly make. So basically it was going to be an onion- garlic infused oil and I was going to use coconut oil as a carrier oil. You can read the benefits of coconut oil in this article by Dr Axe. This would add all the benefits of onions and garlic that I was looking for for my hair without actually applying onion juice. You can read about the benefits of Onion Juice for hair in this article by Healthline and Medical News Today. You can also read about the benefits of garlic for hair in this article by Healthline.

As teenagers we have all applied castor oil on our lashes and eyebrows to make them longer and thicker respectively! I know I know! The things we do for vanity sake as teenagers! So I thought if it can grow lashes and eyebrows, i should also add it to my oil. Almond oil also called Badaam Rogan in India is legendary for its benefits for skin and hair. Read about the benefits of Almond oil here. I use Vitamin E oil on my face every night and decided to add a little bit of that as well.

This oil has a pretty strong smell and you can add some essential oils if you want, for the smell. There is however no lingering smell once you shampoo it off. Since we have used onions and garlic, I felt it was best to keep about 1/4 of the oil on the shelf for daily use and refrigerate the rest for later use. Some of my other homemade, all natural beauty products are Miracle oil for Hair Loss and Frizziness, Face Mask for Pigmentation and Sugar lemon Body Scrub.

Moving on to the recipe, here is the written recipe followed by the step by step pictorial one-

Cuisine Ayurvedic, Home Remedies, Indian

Servings 4 cups

Equipment

  • 1 large steel pot
  • 1 large steel spoon
  • 1 sieve
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Organic Virgin Cold Pressed, Unrefined Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 cup castor oil
  • 1/2 cup Almond oil
  • 1/4 cup Vitamin E oil
  • 3 cups curry leaves
  • 2 large red onions sliced
  • 20-25 large cloves of garlic roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup dry Indian gooseberry/Amla
  • 1/2 cup dry Hibiscus flowers
  • 1/4 cup Fenugreek seeds/methi dana
  • 1/8 cup Nigella seeds/kalonji

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the curry leaves
  • In a large pan, heat coconut oil
  • Add onions, garlic, amla, hibiscus flowers,fenugreek/methi and nigella/kalonji and curry leaves one by one to the oil
  • Cook on medium heat, stirring in between, till curry leaves and garlic pieces turn brown(took me about 30-40 minutes)
  • Remove the pan from heat and leave it aside for 10-12 hours/overnight
  • Next day strain the oil and add almond, castor and vitamin E oil
  • Massage on the scalp twice a week and keep on hair for 2-3 hours
  • Shampoo and condition as usual
  • Keep about 1 cup for use and put the rest in refrigerator for later use

Notes

If Vitamin E oil is not available, open a vitamin E capsule/gel and remove the gel on your palm. Mix it with the hair oil and massage on the scalp. I did not have hibiscus flowers, but I do recommend it as its very beneficial for hair. Use the best coconut oil that’s available. Since we have used onions and garlic and even though they have been fried well in the oil, its best to put the remaining oil in the fridge and just keep enough for one month on the counter.

Hi Ram, this oil has helped a lot of people. You can skip the garlic and make without it.

    • Shivangi Dubey

Can i use cold pressed centrifuged virgin coconut oil from “Organic India”??

      • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Shivangi, that will work. Any good quality cold pressed coconut oil should be fine.

  2. Norah Kila

I will try. But I have tried Coconut/Aloivera and Turmeric and boil to bring up the oil. Now I will try the ingredients.
    Thanks.

  4. Annie

Hi Aanchal, thank you for sharing your hair care.
I’m going to make this oil but I have a question. Can I leave the seeds, curry leaves, onion and garlic in the oil instead of straining them so that they keep infusing? I was thinking to keep it in a glass bottle in the sun but I’m not sure if it’s the right thing to do

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Annie, To infuse, leave the ingredients for a day or two, I dont think longer than that is required. There are too many ingredients and it would get difficult to use the oil.

  5. Harry

Hello Does this work for Men, and how long would you say I should expect to see some results of hair growth

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Harry, certainly works for men and women. Please apply at least twice a week for few months

      • Harry

Thank you for your quick response, I will start gathering the ingredients to try this out.

    • Aanchal Gupta

Yes it’s all natural so should be safe for children

  6. Lakshmi

    Hi Anchal,

Thank you for sharing the recipe. I made this oil after the curry leaves turned crisp I left it over night. As the oil was still hot, all the ingredients got a bit more fried and the oil now looks burnt. Can I still use the oil or should I just discard and make again?

    • Aanchal Gupta

It should be ok to use. The purpose of leaving overnight is to keep infusing the properties of all the ingredients into the oil. Coconut oil has a very high smoke point, so I think it’s good to use.

  7. Amruta

Hi, usually oil with onion is asked to prepare only for 2 weeks portion as the oil may start stinking. Do you follow the same, or is it fine to make large portions and keep in refrigerator?

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Amruta, I do make a large quantity and usually divide into 3-4 containers. Keep one for use and put the others in fridge or freezer. Oil stays perfectly fine in freezer for up to 6 months

    • Aanchal Gupta

Yes Andrea, I do wash it out. You can keep the oil overnight if you want. Use an old pillow case if you choose to keep overnight.

  8. Arwind Kumar

    Hiii Anchal
Thanks for caring about others first of all cuz very few do that! I love Ayurveda since beginning but after spending so much money on these things now i am left with hair thinning and now came across your article. Will this help to block DHT as well or i need to add something more than that and is it necessary to keep it on flame directly? Can we boil water and keep the pan in it? Please help

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Arwind, thank you. I love all natural products and ingredients as well. Not sure about blocking DHT. I don’t see any harm in cooking the coconut oil. Coconut oil has a very high boiling point. Cooking the ingredients with the oil helps to get maximum benefits. I would not heat castor, almond and vitamin E oil. Those should be added in the end. All the best and hope this oil helps you. Please share your feedback.

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Harshika, the oil can last up to 6 months in the fridge or freezer. I divide the oil in 4 containers. Keep 1/4 for use and refrigerate/ freeze the other three containers. Take out as needed

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Deepa, Amla powder can be difficult to strain that’s why I prefer the whole ones. But of course if that’s your only option , you can use it

  9. Parul tomar

    Hi
Can i use this oil for premature greying and female pattern baldness

  10. Rup

    Hi Aanchal
Thank you for sharing this recipe. Can I use fresh amla instead of dry amla? I only have that available at my place.
    Thanks, Rup

  11. Malki

    Hi
I already make this oil. But it little bit dark yellow color. Is it okay or did I do something wrong? Also it little bit smell. Is it normal?
    Thank you

    • Aanchal Gupta

Hi Malki, the color is fine. Usually it’s greenish because of curry leaves. It has a strong smell, that’s also ok. It’s normal

  12. mary

All are talking about how to use the oil, have anybody used it and there is a remarkable change in your hair. Nobody has replied.
be specific in your replies thanks

  13. Rukmani Bhagia

Can we use mustard oil in place of Coconut oil ?reason for that is mustard oil is more suitable for me then coconu oil.

    • Aanchal Gupta

Yes, you can use mustard oil, that is also very good for hair. Mustard oil also has a high smoking point, so it should work.

  14. Molly

Should the oil be hot when you add onions, garlic etc or can it be added to cold oil

    • Aanchal Gupta

Regular oil massages help to stimulate growth. So after applying oil, spend few minutes to massage the oil into the scalp.

  15. Archna

very knowledgeable article. I appreciate the effort which the author has put in. Thanks for sharing.
